10 top tips to tackle your to-do list and get things done

Do you have too much to do and not enough time to do it?

Do you have lots of ideas but find it hard to get started or follow through on a project?

Do you feel overwhelmed with an ever-growing list of tasks or get easily distracted so feel like you aren’t progressing towards your goals?

The solution is a to-do list and how you tackle your to-do list to boost your productivity and achieve your goals.

A to-do list is one, central place for you to capture, organise and prioritise your tasks and projects as well as your personal chores and responsibilities.

To-do lists have become essential tools to help you stay organised and productive. 

However, in spite of their benefits, they can also highlight the overwhelming burden of multiple responsibilities and can become a source of stress. 

In this blog post, I will share my 10 top tips to help you tackle your to-do list and get things done:

1. Break down big projects into little tasks

If you’ve got a big project to do, there’s no point putting e.g.’ Get a new website’ into your to-do list.

It will feel too big and daunting and may prevent you from getting started. 

Instead, break down larger tasks into smaller, manageable subtasks.

2. Prioritise your tasks based on urgency and importance

Instead of a long list of tasks, consider prioritising them using the Eisenhower Matrix. 

This categorises tasks into four quadrants:

1. Important & urgent

2. Important & not urgent

3. Urgent & not important

4. Not important & not urgent

This framework will help you allocate your time and attention to the tasks that matter.

3. Identify the next 3 things

Don’t let your to-do list overwhelm you! Decide the next three things you’re going to do and write them out/add then to your task manager.

Simply number the items on your to do list in order of what’s next. 

This will help you get started, stay focused and build momentum.

4. Identify the 1 thing

If identifying 3 things feels too much or you find it hard to get started, ask yourself: What’s the 1 thing I can do today that will make the biggest difference?

Until you’ve done this, everything else is a distraction!

5. Practise the 2-minute rule 

If it takes less than two minutes to do, then don’t add it to your to do list, just DO IT! 

Don’t clog up your to-do list with those small but niggling tasks. 

This simple rule eliminates small tasks from accumulating, frees up mental space and reduces procrastination.

6. Integrate wellbeing and personal goals into your to-do list. 

Your to-do list isn’t just for work and home tasks. 

Add in time for exercise, breaks, social connections and hobbies. 

Treat these activities equally as work-related tasks, ensuring a holistic approach to productivity and wellbeing. 

7. Write a ta-dah list

We spend so much time writing our to-do lists but how about writing a ta-da list to celebrate your achievements? It’s a bit like writing a to-do list but in reverse!

A ta-dah list is a great way to reflect on your week or month, celebrate reaching important milestones, and finish your week or month on a high! 

8. Develop a healthy relationship with your to-do list

Our to-dos list is designed to support our productivity rather than to feel like it’s another thing to do!

Try batching tasks together to help stay in the zone and remember to turn notifications and alerts off during deep, focused work. 

9. Review your to-do list at the end of each day

At the end of each day, look ahead to the next day to see which tasks are next or need prioritising or rescheduling. 

10. Carry out a weekly review

A weekly review is a great opportunity to review your to-do list, and identify which tasks are outstanding, what you are waiting for and what you need to change or do next.
