How to carry out an effective mid-year review

As we reach the halfway point of the year, it is the perfect time to reflect, review and reset and carry out a mid-year review of your business or job.

A mid-year review is more than just a check-in.

It is an opportunity to assess progress towards your goals, identify challenges and realign your goals for the remainder of the year.

The 3 R’s: reflect, review and reset will help you structure and carry out an effective mid-year review:

Reflect

Revisit the annual goals you set at the beginning of the year or for Q1 and Q2. 

Reflect on your achievements, challenges and areas for improvement.

Ask yourself:

  • Am I/we on track to meet these goals?
  • Have any goals become irrelevant or unrealistic?
  • Do I/we need to adjust timelines or expectations?
  • What external factors (economic, political, environmental) could be impacting my business or job?

A mid-year review is a good opportunity to realign your team’s focus and ensure everyone is working toward the same goals and objectives.

Review

Review the data and insights from your marketing, lead generation and sales performance.

Identify successful strategies and areas that need improvement.

Compare these metrics to your targets and previous periods to identify trends.

Review the tools and software you use. Are they still effective?

How do you want to feel by the end of the year? 

What support might you need?

This is a great time to evaluate your team’s performance and conduct employee check-ins or surveys to gather honest feedback.

Reset

A mid-year review helps to reset or realign your goals for the remainder of the year.

  • Which goals do you want to set next?
  • What steps do you need to take to achieve your goals? 
  • How will you measure or track your progress? 
  • Identify training needs or career development opportunities.

Don’t forget to recognize what is going well! Celebrate milestones and acknowledging yours and your team’s hard work.

By taking the time to reflect, review and refocus and carry out a mid-year review, you can take action towards finishing the year strong.
