How to carry out a mid-year review of your business

As a small business owner, you might feel like you are so busy running your business, that you hardly ever, or never have the time to pause and really reflect ‘on’ your business. 

The halfway point of 2024 is a good opportunity to carry out a mid-year review of your business – to reflect on your progress, review your business goals and set your next quarter or 6-month business goals.

The 5 R’s will help you do just that:

  1. Reflect
  2. Refocus
  3. Reorganise
  4. Restore
  5. Review

Let’s take a look at the 5 R’s in more detail and some prompts to help you carry out a mid-year review of your business:


  • Revisit the goals you set at the beginning of the year or for Q1 and Q2. 
  • What have you achieved? 
  • What have you learned? 
  • What are you most proud of?
  • What challenges did you experience and how did you overcome them? 


  • Which goals do you want to set next?
  • What steps do you need to take to achieve your goals? 
  • How will you measure or track your progress? 


  • What are your priorities moving forward?
  • What do you need to do, perhaps differently to get started?
  • What resources do you need?
  • What help might you need?


  • How are your energy levels – physically, mentally and emotionally? 
  • How do you want to feel by the end of the year? 
  • What support might you need?


  • Examine your marketing, lead generation and sales performance.
  • Identify successful strategies and areas that need improvement.
  • Review the tools and software you use. Are they still effective? Does the technology support your business objectives?

Evaluate employee performance

If you have employees, this is a good time to have 1-1s to evaluate their performance. identify their goals and discuss their professional development. 

Share your mid-year review findings with key stakeholders (partners, investors, employees).

Developing your action plan 

A mid-year review is a chance to recalibrate and set a clear path for the next half of the year with a revised action plan.

Knowing the goals you want to achieve is the starting point but knowing the route to achieve them can sometimes be unclear. 

This can easily lead to overwhelm, procrastination and unaccomplished goals. You need an action plan!

An action plan is a breakdown of tasks and to-dos to help you achieve your goals.

An action plan will help you to:

  • See everything you’re working on in one place
  • Prioritise your time and tasks
  • Track your progress toward your goals
  • Reach milestones and deadlines
  • Hold yourself accountable for getting things done
