3 easy ways to create your business action plan

Posted on 1 February, 2021 by Lyndsey Segal in Business Coaching

We may know the goals we want to achieve but knowing the route to achieve them can sometimes be unclear. This can easily lead to overwhelm, procrastination and unaccomplished goals.

I am going to share a simple, yet really effective tool, to help you break down your goals into small, achievable steps, which will support and encourage you to achieve your goals – your business action plan.

What is an action plan and how will it benefit my business?

An action plan is a sequence of steps or actions that need to be completed and when they should be completed by, in order to achieve the goals you have set.

An action plan will help you to:

  • See everything you’re working on in one place
  • Prioritise your tasks
  • Track your progress toward your goals
  • Reach milestones and deadlines
  • Hold yourself accountable for getting things done

Sounds good, right? Let’s get started.

Creating your business action plan – in just 3 easy steps:

1. Brainstorm

Start by brainstorming all the tasks you need to complete to achieve your goal.

This process is similar to Mind mapping. You may like to use an online mind mapping tool like Mindmeister, record them digitally or use good, old-fashioned pen and paper.

2. Prioritise

It is useful to determine which of the tasks are high, medium and low priority in order to meet your deadlines.

Now you are ready to start formulating your action plan!

You may find it helpful to start this process by working forwards. Ask yourself ‘what is the very first step I need to take?’ Once that task is complete, ‘what comes next?’ Keep repeating this process until you reach your goal. Then include target dates for each task.

Another option is to work backwards. Ask yourself ‘What is the final task I need to do before I will achieve my goal?’ Once that task is complete, ‘What is the step before that? Keep working backwards until you reach where you are today. Then include target dates for each task.

3)Review

Regularly reviewing your tasks will help you to assess your progress and setbacks, update your task list and make a plan for how to move forwards.

Here are 3 questions to help you:

  1. What progress have I made on my top priorities?
  2. What needs to be updated
  3. What needs to happen next?

Your action plan is a working document, which you can add to and adjust over time. Remember to create markers on your journey towards your goal and celebrate your successes! Good luck!
