3 ways to manage your time more effectively

Posted on 31 January, 2020 by Lyndsey Segal in Business Coaching

If we all have 24 hours in a day, how can we use them more effectively?

The irony is we need to make time for time management!

Balancing all the spinning plates can often feel overwhelming but there are time management tools, resources and systems available to help better manage your time more effectively and create processes that are faster and more effective.

Here are three ideas and some recommended tools to help you manage your time more effectively:

1) Timetabling

Creating an overview of your week will help you see the time you have available and how to be more focused and productive with it. Also include activities that you would like to try or restart such as going for a run, going to a yoga class, attending a networking event.

2) Planning

Scheduling your tasks in advance, deciding how much time to devote to each of them and setting realistic deadlines can help keep you focused and on track. Using a timer can be helpful. Consider what times of day best suit certain tasks and when you are your most productive.

3) Remove distractions

Usually we’re balancing to-do lists, emails, phone calls, meetings at the same time that we are trying to get something significant accomplished.

Identifying your distractions makes it easier to minimise them. Whether it’s turning your phone to silent, turning off social media or email notifications, removing or at least minimising your distractions will help to create time for deep, focused work rather than fragmented, interrupted sessions.

Helpful tools

One of my personal favourites is the Todoist app. It’s a brilliant to-do list manager that helps to organise and prioritise your tasks. You can note them down as soon as they pop into your head and schedule each one for that day, the next seven days and beyond in an inbox. It works across all your devices so it’s with you wherever you go.

Trello is a collaboration tool that organises your projects into ‘boards’. In one glance, Trello tells you what’s being worked on, who’s working on what, and where something is in a process.

Calendly is a scheduling software for organizing meetings and appointments between individuals and their colleagues and between businesses and their clients or customers.
