5 ways to boost your productivity and achieve your goals

After starting a new year with new goals and intentions, you may find yourself feeling stuck, overwhelmed or uncertain how to turn these into action, be productive and get your best work done.

Productivity isn’t about working longer hours or filling every moment of your day. It’s about working smarter and building habits to help you work more effectively, efficiently and sustainably. 

In this post, I am sharing five practical ways to boost your productivity and achieve your goals: 

1. Break down your goals into subgoals 

Goals can be exciting and motivating but they can also feel scary and intimidating.

To make your goals feel more achievable, break them down into manageable steps or milestone called subgoals.

An example of this is:

  • Main goal: Write a book
  • Subgoals: Complete outline, finish chapter 1, finish chapter 2, complete first draft, revise manuscript, find publisher

Subgoals make large goals less overwhelming and more actionable by creating a clear sequence of achievable steps. 

Subgoals also provide natural points to track progress. Each completed subgoal gives you a sense of accomplishment that motivates you toward the next one.

2. Protect your Power Hours

You may find that there are times when you are feeling super alert, ticking lots of items off from your to-do list and feeling in flow. 

There may also be times when it feels like getting started, continuing with a task or completing a task is a struggle.

There are only a few hours in the day when your attention levels are at their highest. These are your Power Hours.

Use your Power Hours for your most important tasks and your less productive times for tackling easy or quick-to-complete tasks.

3. Use the 4 Ds of productivity

We’ve all been there: staring at a to-do list that seems to grow longer by the hour and not knowing what to do first. 

This is where the 4 Ds of productivity can help.

Split your to-do list or email into the 4 areas of Do, Delegate, Defer and Delete. 

This will help you prioritise on what is most important and what can be done later, by someone else or not at all.

4. Remove distractions

Dreaded distractions. They’re everywhere!

Phones, email, the internet, people, pets, noise, social media and notifications to name but a few.

People get distracted or interrupted every 3 minutes and it takes an average of 10-15 minutes to return to a task. 

During your peak hours of productivity, try turning off your email and phone notifications, putting your phone out of sight or using noise-cancelling headphones to help you stay in the zone and boost your productivity.

5. Create monthly check-ins to review your goals

It can be easy to set it and forget it when it comes to goal setting.

Creating monthly check-ins will help you reflect on your progress and determine your next steps. 

Answering these three questions will help:

  1. What progress have I made?
  2. What challenges have I experienced?
  3. What do I need to change or do next? 

You can share your answers with a colleague or coach to keep you motivated and accountable

Productivity isn’t about cramming more into your day. It’s about making intentional choices that align with your energy, priorities and goals. Pick one technique that resonates with you, experiment with it for a week, and notice what changes.
