How to set realistic and achievable goals

Posted on 1 April, 2018 by Lyndsey Segal in Business Coaching

Spring is here! It’s a time for new beginnings, to look forwards with positivity and ensure you plan for success in 2018.

We all need goals to motivate us and to give us a sense of meaning and purpose. They need to be challenging enough to excite us but also realistic and achievable.

The following will help you to set realistic and achievable goals:

Set SMART goals

Specific – your goals need to be as specific as possible.

Measurable – Assign a time frame to achieve your goals. Adding specific dates, times and amounts makes your progress quantifiable.

Attainable – make sure your goals are realistic and manageable.

Relevant – align your goals with the direction you want your life and career to take. Create long-term and short-term goals.

Time bound – having a finish line to aim towards will motivate you to achieve your goals.

Write down your goals and if it helps why they are important to you. Talk about them to people too – it will increase the chance of you achieving them!

Use positive language to help make your goals achievable.

Prioritise Break down your goals into the ones with the highest sense of urgency. This helps you to avoid feeling overwhelmed and helps to direct your attention to the most important ones.

Create an action plan It’s easy to be so focused on the outcome that you forget the steps needed to achieve it.

Evaluate your goals It’s important to think about what you did, how you did it and what you learnt during the process. Identify what worked or didn’t work for you and what you could do differently next time. Reflecting on this will increase your accomplishments even more as you apply them to your future goal setting.

Setting Business Goals

Business goals are a fundamental part of business planning. They inform your vision and mission statements and enable you to create an action plan to launch or move your business forwards.

Research has shown that you are 2x to 3x more likely to stick to your goals if you make a specific action plan.

Running your own business or being a freelancer can be isolating as there’s no-one else to keep you on track or bounce ideas off. Setting goals helps to give you focus, direction and a sense of purpose. They help to boost your motivation and measure your success.
