3 top tips to help set your 2023 professional goals

Posted on 1 December, 2022 by Lyndsey Segal in Business Coaching, Professional Coaching

At the start of a new year, our minds invariably turn to what we want to achieve in our work or business – our professional goals – and how they can help inform our next steps.

Knowing how or where to start setting your professional goals can sometimes feel confusing or overwhelming.

Read on to find out find out about my 3 top tips to help set your 2023 professional goals.

1. Set SMART professional goals

Setting SMART goals will help to clarify your ideas, focus your efforts, use your time and resources productively and increases your chances of achieving your goals.

SMART is an acronym that you can use to guide your goal setting.

S: Specifiic

M: Measurable

A: Achievable

R: Relevant

T: Time-bound

Some people have expanded this to SMARTER to include extra focus areas such as Evaluated and Reviewed.

To make sure your goals are clear and achievable, each one should be:

Specific

Your goal should be clear and defined.

When setting your goals, try to answer the five “W” questions:

  1. What do I want to accomplish?
  2. Why is this goal important?
  3. Who is involved?
  4. Where is it located?
  5. Which resources do I need?

Measurable

Setting measurable goals will help you track your progress, stay focused and motivated to meet your deadlines and milestones.

A measurable goal should address questions such as:

  • How much?
  • How many?
  • How will I know when it is achieved?

Achievable

Your goals should stretch your abilities but still remain possible.

Think about the resources, assets and time you have available.

Consider how you can accomplish the goals and the steps you need to take.

Relevant

Is what you are trying to achieve relevant and realistic?

Think about why your goals are important to you and the difference their outcomes will make to your business or job.

Ensure your goals are aligned with your mission, vision and values.

Time bound

Every goal needs a target date or deadline to focus on and work towards.

Add key dates and milestones to your calendar and task manager app.

Setting and reviewing your goals monthly or quarterly will help you regularly reflect, review and possibly reset.

2. Keep your professional goals visible

We are 42% more likely to reach our goals if we write them down and keep them visible.

Whether they are saved on your desktop, or written on a whiteboard or stuck on a noticeboard near to your desk, keeping your goals visible will help them to stay top of mind and encourage you to take regular steps towards achieving them.

3. Regularly reflect on your professional goals

Having regular review points to evaluate your goals and progress is important.

Carrying out weekly or monthly reviews will help you evaluate your progress toward your goals and determine your next steps.

Answering these three questions will help:

1. What progress have I made?

2. What setbacks have I encountered?

3. What do I need to change or do next?

Remember to celebrate your milestones and successes!

Setting SMART professional goals, keeping them visible and regularly reflecting on them will hold you accountable and bring focus and purpose to your productivity.

Many people know the goals they want to achieve, but they don’t know how to get there.
