Returning to work in September – 5 top tips to find your focus

Posted on 1 September, 2025 by Lyndsey Segal in Business Coaching, Professional Coaching

As September rolls in, many of us face the challenge of transitioning from holiday mode back into the rhythm of work.

Whether you have had a few weeks off or just enjoyed a slower pace, returning to work in September can feel daunting.

Here are 5 ways to make a smooth and successful return to work after the summer break:

1. Ease back into your routine

Jumping straight into a packed schedule can feel overwhelming. Instead:

  • Block out time for planning and catching up
  • Re-establish your daily routines—wake-up time, meals, exercise and breaks
  • Start with a lighter workload if possible

2. Revisit your goals

September is a great month to set new goals so you can finish the year on a high.

  • Review your goals from earlier in the year—what’s on track, what needs attention?
  • Set fresh priorities for Q3 and Q4
  • Break big goals into manageable steps and milestone dates

Make sure your goals are S-M-A-R-T (specific, measurable, achievable, realistic and time-bound).

Think about why the goals are important to you and the difference their outcomes will make.

3. Create an action plan

September is a great time of year to create new goals and an action plan to help you achieve them.

Break down your goals into small, achievable steps and prioritise them in order of importance or deadline dates.

Put key dates in your calendar or digital tool.

Sharing your tasks and to-dos will hold you accountable and help to keep you focused and on track.

Remember to celebrate as you reach milestones along the way!

4. Prioritise your tasks

Effective time management isn’t just about getting everything on your to-do list done or clearing your mental load. It’s about prioritising the things that are important to you and focusing on them.

Start by creating a to-do list and identifying which tasks or projects need to be focused on first.

This will help you focus and prioritise on what is most important so you can finish the year strong.

5. Review your website

September is a good time to review your website and check that the content reflects your current business offering, products and services.

  • Does your website clearly show your core (or new) products and services and how you help?
  • Is it intuitive and easy to navigate around?
  • Is it easy for customers to book or buy from you?

I hope these 5 top tips will help you return to work refreshed, focused and ready to thrive.
