5 ways to manage your energy and boost your productivity

Posted on 2 October, 2023 by Lyndsey Segal in Business Coaching, Professional Coaching, wellbeing

Most people experience fluctuations in their energy levels throughout the day.

Perhaps you start the day raring to go, experience a post-lunch dip and get a second wind of energy towards the end of the day.

Or perhaps you take a while to get going in the morning and experience a peak in productivity later in the day.

They key is to understand your peaks and troughs and manage your work around your energy levels

How can you become more attuned to your peaks and troughs of energy levels and adjust your working patterns accordingly?

Read on to find 5 ways to manage your energy and boost your productivity.

1. Track your energy levels

Using a journal or an energy tracker to log the things that give you energy and deplete your energy can help to better understand and manage your fluctuations.

This will help to identify your ‘Power Hours’ – a 90 to 120-minute window in which your attention, focus and energy are at their highest.

Schedule your most important tasks during these times.

2. Establish energy-boosting rituals

Simple changes to your daily routine can help move away from an ‘always-on’ mindset and help to boost your energy levels and well-being.

Adopting a healthy sleep routine, drinking more water, eating nutritious meals, exercising in the morning, switching off from social media, meditating, practicing mindfulness are all proven ways to boost your energy.

3. Build the habit of rest into your day

Rest is an essential part of managing your energy.

Rest improves concentration, enhances creativity, boosts performance and facilitates your decision-making and problem-solving capabilities.

Write down little rituals of rest that you can turn to at different points in your day or whenever the need arises.

Factor in times to rest in your day, just as you would your meetings, lunch break or collecting your kids from school.

4. Take regular breaks

Breaks help to:

  • Restore focus
  • Increase motivation
  • Consolidate memory and learning
  • Boost creativity and productivity
  • Reduce stress

Use your breaks to re-energise, whether that be playing with a pet, having a snack, doing some deep breathing or stretches.

These will help boost your energy levels as well as your productivity.

5. Keep hydrated

Here are 3 top tips to help you stay hydrated and energised throughout the day:

  • Start the day with water
  • Aim for 1.5-2 litres a day
  • Keep a water bottle on your desk

Weaving restorative practices and building healthy habits into your day are integral to boosting your energy levels and therefore also your performance, productivity and wellbeing.
