7 top tips to set achievable business goals in 2021

Posted on 4 January, 2021 by Lyndsey Segal in Business Coaching

At the start of a new year, our minds invariably turn to what we want to achieve in our business – our business goals – and how we can use them to guide and grow our business.

COVID-19 has taught us the importance of being flexible and resilient in the way we plan, adapt and run our business.

During the pandemic, it is important to set achievable goals – that can help us to (re)gain control and move our business forward, in spite of the ups and downs along the way!

Here are my 7 top tips to help you achievable business goals in 2021:

1. Start with the why

Think about why the goals are important to you and the difference their outcomes will make to you and your business.

This will help you plan the next steps of your business and motivate you to take action to achieve your goals.

2. Set goals by size

Many people find it hard to set the traditional long-term, medium-term and short-term goals when circumstances are changing so frequently.

Instead, a useful strategy is to separate goals according to their size. Identifying little, medium, and big-sized goals can help bring a sense of accomplishment.

If you’re feeling stuck or overwhelmed, setting micro-goals will help you make incremental changes, one step at a time.

Build these tasks into your schedule, timetable or planner to boost your productivity and hold yourself accountable.

3. Set SMART goals

These are goals that are S-Specific, M-Measurable, A-Attainable, R-Realistic and T-Timely.

4. “Begin with the end in mind

At the end of 2021, how do you want your business to be?

You may find it helpful to work backwards, identifying the steps needed to achieve your vision and create your business goals.

5. Write down your goals

The physical act of writing down your business goals will make them more real and increase the chance of you achieving them. Talk about your business goals with your family, friends, colleagues or Business Coach to help keep you accountable.

6. Keep your goals visible

Whether you save your business goals to your desktop, write them on a white board or in your notebook, keeping your goals visible will remind and encourage you to take frequent action to achieve them.

7. Regularly reflect on your goals

Carrying out a weekly/monthly review will help you to reflect on your business goals and make any necessary adjustments or changes.

Answering these three questions will help you evaluate and plan your next steps:

1.What progress have I made?

2.What setbacks have I encountered?

3.What do I need to change?

During times of uncertainty, it is important to set goals that we have as much control over as possible. Our goals need to be challenging enough to motivate and excite us, as well as being realistic and achievable. We need to reflexible and resilient to adapt and adjust to circumstances, often beyond our control. I hope my top 7 tips will help you set achievable business goals in 2021.
