January is a great time of year to set goals. They help us gain clarity and focus on the direction of our business and carve out a route to achieving them.

Knowing how or where to start setting business goals can sometimes feel overwhelming, so knowing how to choose appropriate goals, categorise goals, structure and evaluate goals can really help.

Choosing appropriate goals

Our goals need to be important and motivating to us. They need to be challenging enough to excite us but also be realistic and achievable.

Goals should be SMART: Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Realistic and Timely.

Prioritising goals with the highest sense of urgency can help us focus on the most important goals.

Categorising goals under different headings relevant to our business can also be helpful.

Examples of different types of goals:

  • Customer/client goals
  • Product goals
  • Branding goals
  • Marketing goals
  • Digital goals
  • Financial goals

Structuring goals

Identifying the steps needed to achieve our goals by a specific date or month is motivating and helps to provide a supportive structure to goal setting.

Evaluating goals

Creating markers or milestones is a great way to monitor progress along the way.

Check that the goals are still relevant as circumstances may change throughout the year.

Writing goals down and sharing them increase our chances of achieving them! Checking on our goals throughout the year helps to keep us on track and move our businesses forward. Good luck!
